Die letzte Folge unserer Mini-Serie über Magnetfelder im Kosmos blickt in das Zentrum unserer Milchstraße - und zwar mit dem in der Stratosphäre fliegenden Weltraumteleskop SOFIA. Mit ihm ist es 2017 erstmals gelungen, Magnetfelder im Zentrum der Milchstraße nachzuweisen, eine materiereiche Region im Umfeld des Schwarzen Lochs Sagittarius A* mit einer Ausdehnung von nur wenigen hundert Lichtjahren. Die indirekte Methode nutzt die Tatsache, dass diese Magnetfelder einen Teil der Infrarotstrahlung in diesen Gaswolken polarisiert. Solche Magnetfelder stabilisieren also die Materie und wirken so der Gravitation entgegen.
